Hello! I am not new to chickens, I've had them all my life, but there have been a few years of traveling and moving when I could not have chickens. I've recently started a new flock of chickens, but I live on the east coast of the US now, so it's a lot different from the warmer weather and milder winters of the west coast that I grew up in.

I currently have 8 chickens, including one rooster, and I am hopeful my incubating eggs will hatch and increase the size of my flock. My flock includes Rhode Island reds, black sexlinks, bantams, ameraucanas, buff orpingtons, and an Easter egger. My hatching eggs include silkies, ameraucanas, black copper marans, and Ayam Cemani.

I love raising chickens. They're so funny and cute, and I love to pet them and watch them run around.

My other hobbies include gardening, arts and crafts, computer games, and research. I absolutely love doing research, which helps me with my degree in natural science.

I do have children, and we have other pets including dogs, a cat, reptiles, other birds besides poultry, and a hedgehog.

WELCOME TO BYC!

Welcome! You have quite the critter family!

Your chickens will be OK in colder weather. I have a heat panel that just warms things up a little. I only use it if it's going to be way below zero and I happen to have a lot less chickens than normal. Especially if the temps drop suddenly. Chickens tolerate cold better than heat. Ventilation is important. If you have windows in the coop and you see condensation then you would need more ventilation so they don't get frostbite on their combs.
