Hi all! New to owning backyard chickens. I have 3 lavender Orpingtons and 3 silver laced Wyandottes. The Orps are about 16 weeks old and the Wyandottes around 5 weeks. Orps are in the coop while the Wyandottes are doing day time in an aviary in sight of the Orps. Will this visual help them when it is time to integrate? Planning on need to lock the little ones in the coop for part of the integration time, then setting up a safe zone in the run....input appreciated on if I have a good plan in place.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Your idea of a "safe zone" in the run is perfect. I've seen pallets leaning on the fences, overturned chairs, wooden boxes, logs, etc. used to provide cover for younger ones.

Our younger groups are approximately the same ages as yours and are already integrated in the temp coop together. There is a bit of hierarchy in there, but it works out. They all free-range with the older ones, albeit on separate sides of the yard, who sleep in the main coop.

For our silkies, it's not until they are about 4 months, preferably 5 months old, before moving them to the main coop works seamlessly.
