Thanks so much for the welcome! I have used backyard chickens to research many thing do with our flock in the last few months but have just became a member. Dk what took me so long. Lol I have a mixed flock of chickens and turkeys. Love them all but esp favorable of the polish breed. I am esp concerned re going into winter for the polish and silkies. Anyone have any input? I live in indiana.

Welcome from Illinois!

I always thought that Polish & other breeds with feathered feet were more cold tolerant, but needed protection from extreme temps & wind. . . .

Glad you decided to join us! I don't know anything about silkies or polish hens so, I can't answer you questions. If you don't get a answer you can type in your question as "Question about Silkies and winter" and I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Hello and welcome to BYC

Where we live we have very mild winters, luckily! So I never thought about the cold and chickens, but why don't you browse through the Coops section and see what the other members got up to?

That may be true of the feathered feet because I have read about frost bite. Silkies have feathered feet but polish do not. Well at least my polish don't. Lol size is my biggest concern. The others I think r large enough to withstand with just some small modfications. Wasn't sure about them tho. But yes I will look around this site and see what's out there. Thanks so much! :)

Welcome From West Virginia I keep silkies and polish i just got the polish so i can not help if they do good in the winter but i hook up a brooder lamp in my coop if you have a big big coop you can hook up more brooder lamps but my silkies do fine put lots of bedding down in nest boxes and on ground if so but last winter i did not have a run on my coop so i do not know if they would be fine if the went out at the run but i am sure they are fine going out in the run at winter but you could be taking a chance at getting your chickens frost bit if you let them in the run personally i would not let them in the run but that is all i have but if you ever have any questions about silkie's ask me i will be more than happy to help good luck with winter i hoped i helped and good luck on keeping chickens and turkey have fun on BYC sure you will lol
