I have about 30 chickens. I have one barred rock that her skin is bright red on her back where the rooster knocked off her feathers this summwr. Rooster is now gone, but her skin is still red and also the skin on her rump is bright red. I have checked for parasites and she is clean. She seems normal in every other way. What is with red skin?

! Great to have you here! If your hen is still looking red/raw, you must be careful that the other birds are not singling her out as weak and going after her. It happens. In terms of treatment...I'm not the guy to ask...I would, however, suggest isolating her but keeping her near your other birds. For treatment you might post the symptoms in the link below. Best of luck to you!

Hello and welcome to BYC

Glad you joined us!

Thanks for the info. My hen has red skin, but it is dry and healthy looking otherwise and the other chickens don't seem to have noticed, so far anyway. I do keep an eye on her and she seems happy. Still laying and eating well.

Welcome to BYC. As long as she is not raw or pecked at, don't worry about the redness. It may be hormonal or caused by sun exposure last summer. When she molts, she will be all 'pretty' once again.
