Hello everyone. I am a new member to BYC. I am fairly new to raising chickens. I have 6 from my last year's flock. I've learned a lot about their safety, like putting them in their enclosed house at night ( not just in their fenced in pen) so the coons don't get them. I've also learned not to let them roam free during the day when I am at work but leave them in their pen to roam so the neighbor's dogs don't get them... I also have 3 turkeys, 5 rabbits, cats and dogs. I want to get a lamb but my husband says, "no!" I also have 28 baby chicks right now. 25 are about 5 weeks old and 3 are about 3 weeks old. I love animals.
I am a school teacher and I also love to garden. We live on 40 acres so I have plenty of room to garden and let my animals roam. The weather is finally getting warmer and I am wanting to let my 5 week old chicks out in their own house with warming lights but I am afraid that rats will eat them at night. What do you all think? Good idea or bad? I can wait awhile if needed. I do let them out during the day, in the evening, for a little while. Thanks for any advice on any topic!

! Pleased you joined us! I think at 5 weeks your chicks could be in a warm and secure coop. I take it it's not rat proof? I think the rats would be more interested in the feed than the chickens themselves. Good luck to you!

Thank you for your advice. I'm not sure if it is rat proof or not but I didn't want to take any chances and living in the woods and having crops, it always draws rats. Thanks again! My chicks will be happy to get out of the containers in the garage!
