So glad you joined us, this is definitely the place to come if you want more information or just want some nice people to share your chicken joys with.
I was in your same predicament, I have a 5year old and over all I want friendly chickens, but I also chose Silkies for my pets. There are plenty of good layers out there to choose from, I chose my Rhode Island reds and these chicks are fantastically docile and sweet.

Here is a good chart of chickens by breed, and also gives nice information about how cold hardy they are, how many eggs usually they lay per week, egg color. Also, when you click on the name of the breed of chicken it will tell you even more information and show you a picture of the chicken itself. I'm not promoting this hatchery that this chart is from in any way, just thought it was a pretty easy to read and understand chart of chicken breeds. There are MORE chicken breeds out there, but I think these are a lot of the main ones.

Good Luck on your search and welcome again! :)

! Great to have you aboard! Searching out breeds is the most fun part of getting into chickens! Don't dismiss the idea of getting a mixed flock - I have 13 different varieties in my 18 birds flock. Another great place to learn about breeds is the chart in the link below. Good luck and enjoy the search!
