Hey y'all! We are new to BYC and as green as you can be to raising laying chickens. This is something we really want to do and we have been doing a lot of reading and watching videos, but we are open to suggestions of where to even begin this venture!! We want to have enough eggs for us and our children still home and our older ones who have flown the nest, lol! But seriously, how many should be start with and where should be buy them? Looking forward to making lots of new friends here!

! Great to have you with us! How many birds you should get is predicated on how many you think you'll use a week. Then, you have to determine which breed as there are great, good, fair, and poor layers. Where you should buy them...if you are only looking for egg layers (not show quality), you can still likely find them at local farm and ranch stores. Another option that you give you more choices is a hatchery - here is a link to various breeders and hatcheries.

And here is a link where you can explore the attributes (including laying capacity) of various breeds.

you could venture over to "where am I, where are you," and post on your state thread - you may find local people who can advise you on what breeds does best in your area, climate etc. They may be able to point you to the best places to buy them.
