I've browsed BYC several times before... Now as I start to get serious about raising a flock, I realized I never joined... So now I have :) currently the proud owner of 6 young pearl guineas (maybe 4 months old), 1 white guinea (almost a month old), and I have two dozen RIR eggs in the incubator on day 7.

Hoping to grow a nice size guinea flock that can mostly free range, have multiple small mobile pens of chickens so I can have multiple separate breeds, and would like to experiment with sex links.

Also open to other species. If anyone has any advice on how I can reach my goals, please let me know, I need all the help I can get.

Guinea are so much fun and tend to keep the predators at bay

On night guard duty for the front yard .....

And they do get along with others .....

And not awful hard on the chicks of others ......

Welcome to BYC, and good luck in your goals. Free ranging Guinea fowl can become hard to control. Initially start them out in a coop/run type setting. Once they start free ranging they may insist on roosting in the trees. If predators start to attack and kill them, a method of getting them back in the pen is needed - feed is the great motivator.

We have a coop they were closed up in for a while, they have been loose in their pen for a while now, but I've had trouble getting them to get back up in their coop at night. The last couple days we've let a couple of them out of the pen in the day time and left the rest inside. The free ones have enjoyed chasing grasshoppers and such but stay within about 10 foot of the pen at all times.

Any ideas on how I can convince them to roost in their coop at night other than trying to catch them and stick them in there? Haven't had any problem putting them back in the pen, just been having problems getting them back in the coop. When we had chickens a few years ago, they went back in the coop no problem.

We live in a very secluded area in the country, so our primary reasons for keeping guineas is as bug control and an alarm system. I don't want them straying too far though... How far from "home" will guineas range if you let them?

This is my first time owning guineas... They are so much different than chickens, I'm learning a lot lol.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I don't know anything about guineas. If you need help raising them, you can stop by our Guineas section of the forums for more help...
