I am from Southeast Alabama. I have wanted chickens for years, but my husband said no because we live in a neighborhood. Youngest daughter brought home flyer from 4H about Chick Chain. He said "OK. We have got to build a coop." Really? I wanted them for years and he said no. Anyway. We now have 24, 6 each of White Leghorn, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, and Easter Egger. White Leghorns are 7 weeks old. All others are 6 weeks old. They are so interesting to watch. All are suppose to be hens, but we are watching one Rhode Island Red that has matured early (possible rooster?). Time will tell. I have not been around chickens for about 25 years. This is going to be an experience. Looking forward to learning from you veterans.

Welcome, Amanda! I'm a newbie, too - don't even have my chickens yet (this spring - eagerly waiting!). Everyone here has been very kind and helpful - and they'll all point out the Learning Center. I've been really reading a LOT of those articles, and they've proven very helpful. Right now I'm looking at all the coop designs to get ideas for how I want my husband to design the coop.

Anyway, welcome, welcome!

Hello and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you are enjoying your new flock! You can post pics of the "suspect" in our What Gender section if you think you may have a cockerel on hand....

Enjoy this new adventure you are on! May they always bring you great joy!

Welcome to BYC! You have a great mix of layers. The White Leghorns are egg laying machines, the Buff Orpingtons are so friendly and gentle (my children, and now my granddaughter, made pets of them), the RIRs are hardy and good layers of large, brown eggs, and you will enjoy the colored eggs of the Easter Eggers (they are my granddaughter's favorites as she loves the colored eggs). Good luck with your new flock.
