My name is Becky and I live in Iowa. I have raised chickens off and on for over 30 years. I always appreciate finding new information on taking care of my flock. Right now I have almost 40 chickens, 30 of them just a few months old, and the rest are quite old Black Australorps that I think are going to outlive me! The young birds are a mix of Buffs, Red Ranger, and Rainbow. I am looking forward to being a part of BYC and learning and contributing.

Welcome!

I have never heard of Rainbow? Is that another word for mutt?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Old Aussies? I keep BA's too. They are all about 3 1/2 years old. I am hoping they live a nice long life as well.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I've been raising for 50 years and have raised Black Australorps for a large portion of that and they are still my favorite standard breed; very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

The Rainbow is a new breed from the hatchery here in Iowa. They are supposed to be a dual purpose bird with unique, colorful feather patterns. So far I am pleased with them. They seem to be a fairly calm bird and some of them do have lovely feather patterns. Time will tell.

My BA's are kind of cranky, and they will not hatch and raise chicks. They kill them. They usually want to kill the new chickens I get each year, that is why I went with Buff's. I have always had good luck with them being a good mother.
