So, I'm new to owning chickens! Just found out my Cochin is a rooster! He has been trying to breed with my Buff Brahma. How likely will he succeed to breeding her. I wouldn't mind having some more Buff Brahma/Cochins running around. I also have some Americanas aka Easter Egg Layers. I've checked their eggs to see if they are fertile as well. I'm having a hard time being able to tell if those are fertile or not, but anyways any input is welcomed!

Cochins and Brahmas do sometimes have fertility problems, but it is still likely that your rooster is being successful in breeding. You could always incubate a few eggs and see.

It is very probable that he will be at least a little successful in breeding your Buff Brahmas. Sometimes, Cochins have problems breeding because they have some many feathers around their vents, but at least some of the eggs should be fertile.

It can be hard to determine whether an egg is fertile if you just crack it open and look at the yolk (though it can be done). If you're not certain, just pop a couple in an incubator- in four days or so, you can candle them, and should be able to tell whether they're developing or not!

I've been looking at some incubators. I found one on Amazon for $600, but it's on sale for $112. It rotates the eggs for you and can hold up to 48 eggs. It sounds kind of complicated for a beginner so what are some good incubators that aren't too pricey?? If I don't get one that turns the eggs than how often or how many times a day do I turn the eggs? Thanks for the warm welcome! I get made fun of for having chicken and actually loving them.
