18 to 1 is generated sadly from the number of my flock, I began 3 years ago with 12 chickens that my 3rd daughter picked out and we hand raised on our 28 acre farm 10 months later bought 6 more and integrated successfully. Long story short we lost all but 1 RIR, broke my heart since all had names and half were like the 5 dogs I have. I am looking at restarting but the wounds are very fresh having just lost 8 this past week. Will my 2 year RIR work into a whole new flock?

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear about your losses :hugs Losing flock members is a real heart breaker I hope you get over this soon. Adding new members is best done I have found by the look and don't touch method. Keep them seperate but so they can see each other through wire. This way they become aquainted but with out the fights. This can also be your quarantine for new members. After a few weeks you can add them together but be on watch if you have to intervene if it gets too much or bloody. Adding extra feed and water stations is also a good idea so no one can bullied out. Here is a nice article all about adding new flock members https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=2593-adding-to-your-flock

Wishing you the very best of luck with your new birds. Be sure to ask any questions everyone here to help and very friendly. Is there any way we can help you with not losing anymore birds, was there a definitive cause of your losses?
