Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congrats on becoming a new chicken owner :celebrate What breed/s do you have? Have you checked out the learning centre? Lots of super articles on getting started. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly :frow

That's a great question. Our friend who keeps egg laying chickens, is giving us 2 female chicks and one of the roosters as soon as they are old enough. He has several colors (red, black, spotted, and black w rust) and I did not think to ask the breed because I was busy avoiding the very large rooster. I sure have a lot to learn. I will call him tonight.

Thank You for bringing that to my attention and the learning center link, I'm going to need it.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. You would be better off without the rooster. Your chickens will lay eggs just as well without him-. Unless you need fertile eggs, there is no need to have a rooster. Then can get aggressive to people and the chickens . Also one rooster can handle 10 hens - less than that and they will be overbred and damaged by him.

Everywhere you look folks are trying to get homes for unwanted roosters. It is also difficult to sex some breeds early, so you may end up with roosters anyway.
