Hello,
Very new to chickens. San Diego native..We had a chicken somehow land in our large pepper tree late last July or August. It was all black, would come down to free range in my flower garden. When we realized it didn't belong to any of our neighbors we started feeding it, it would come down eat n go back up high in the tree where it would stay all night. We could never catch it and couldn't figure out what kind it is. I think Hawk's dropped her cause two kept coming around keeping an eye on her.
So we'd fed it, named it Emily, got a small coop and then it started taking dirt baths. Getting bigger and beautiful then molted and then started getting copper feathers around the neck and comb and wattle started getting reddish. Also started getting vocal to the point we thought it was a rooster. Took pictures to feed store and the lady said it was a rooster. Well, my husband looked inside the coop and found 4 eggs so its a hen but we never was able to catch her.
She got a little crazy going to the neighbors across the street. Stopping traffic so we decided to try n catch her to put her in the backyard. When she went in to the coop i shut the door and put her in our backyard.
My husband built a coop n we decided to get a couple more chickens. We got a Gold Wyandotte and a Cochin Ameraucana which we loved and was so sweet but Emily 1st chicken kept picking on her bad so we took her back where we got her. Left us sad cause she was so sweet and let us handle her.
So we are ooking for an older hen to get along with what we have.
Any suggestions..we have been calling every feed store trying to find an older Cochin Ameraucana or similar mellow Chicken. I like the Sussex too.
Thanks
Sharon
