Hello everyone! I love this forum/web site. So rich with information!
My family is new to raising chickens. Kids are 9 and 13. We started raising 3 Black Australorps from chicks in July of 2013. The kids are enjoying having novel pets and I am appreciating the eggs which started coming daily since January 1 2014. We were sad to find that one of our chicks turned out to be a roo, so we had to return him to his original home yesterday where he will be well cared for, so we are now down to 2 hens.
I've been using this site for a lot of great information. I got some plans through a contact on this site and built a coop from raw materials as well as a covered run. It was quite a fun project!
So far, this has not been a venture that will pay itself back in eggs very quickly. So far the cost per dozen eggs is about $1,000 which over time I know will come down considerably. However, I have no regrets. It's not about saving money on eggs. We are LOVING the fresh eggs (and knowing where they came from) and the birds are lovely (yet quirky) companions.
Looking forward to many great years with our hens. It's wonderful to be part of this community.
