Hello BYC people. I am Christopher and my wife of 15 years is Christina. We are new to raising chickens and are at square one on beginning our flock. We are in the planning stages, where to place our coop, what types of hens to purchase, and so forth. I plan to build our coop and have seen some great plans and ideas here at BYC. We are leaning towards Leghorns but are open to any suggestions. We'd prefer to purchase chicken's that are clean (no growth hormones), if that is possible, or are they all clean. Again, very new to this. We are nested in West Jordan, Utah and have a family of 6 children (3 girls and 3 crazy boys). Any advice and suggestions are always welcome. We do hope to have our flock in place before the end of fall. Hope to have fun raising and growing our flock with help and suggestions from many of you here at BYC.

Welcome! It's always great to see more and more people diving in to the world of poultry. It's very exciting. Leghorns are great layers of large white eggs. They do tend to be a bit flighty though. Pretty good birds, all in all. Don't be afraid to experiment with different breeds to see what you like (you can mix them!). Best of luck and congratulations on your first steps!

Welcome to BYC! You will find lots of useful information on this site. White Leghorns are the best layers in the chicken world under idea conditions (with good lighting and warm temperatures) and one White Leghorn holds the world record with 370 eggs in a year. However, in areas with long, cold, dark winters, Sex Link Chickens will outlay them. Also, as Golden Feather pointed out, Leghorns are flighty (mine usually screamed bloody murder when I handled them). Since you have children, you might want to consider Black Sex Links, which are hardier than Leghorns in cold weather and much more docile. Black Australorps are also a very hardy, calm, and gentle breed that lay lots of large, brown eggs. You can check these chickens out by clicking on the breeds icon at the top of the page. As Golden Feather suggested, don't be afraid to experiment with different breeds to see which works best for you. Good luck with your flock.
