New moms with new babies!

I bought my GL Cochin from Ideal as a new chick in early March and what a broody hen she became! She would allow other hens to lay in the box with her and then would immediately steal their eggs and cover them. I found 14 eggs under her one day! I allowed her to brood three. She was also an excellent mother and I allowed her to stay with her babies for a week since I had no safe place for her with her babies back in the big coop. I had to wear thick leather gloves to remove her from the brooder box and return her to the coop. The Frizzle banty (which looks like she walked backwards into a windstorm) was just as good a broody and mother hen. I bought her as a chick from a local feed and farm store in late March. The little Frizzle went broody first in mid August and the GL Cochin followed suit the end of August. Hopefully they'll become broody again in the spring or summer so that I can sell some of their chicks!

Cochins are great Moms. So far this year I've had 1 Cochin hatch out 2 broods (1 silver laced polish bantams and 1 ameraucanas), 1 hatch a batch of Brahmas and I have 1 setting on a dozen Cochin eggs due to hatch next week. I have one that thinks she can hatch golf balls. They all have been great Moms. I love to watch them with the chicks.
