East Texas here. I've never had chickens before but I am fixing to have my first coop built. Have pretty much planned that out but now I'm starting to think about what chicks should I buy first or should I buy full-grown chickens?? Of course fresh eggs are ideal that but I am mostly wanting them for fun. Will eventually buy some ruffled feathered chickens but figured I should start out with basic.

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. Personally, getting pullets that are just about to lay is a good starting point - no need for additional expenditures on brooders etc. Whatever you decide, it's not rocket science :)

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Everyone has their preference on which to start with...I prefer to start with chicks. I find their growth into pullets very interesting and a lot of fun.

No matter where you start, you can always find advice and others to share with here on BYC.

Thanks for joining us!

I am a first time chicken mama too and started with two-day-old chicks.
I loved it.
It was such a joy to see them grow and watch the changes through the different stages of chickhood. We lost one girl and it was heartbreaking. I can say that I learned a lot from that experience but it was sad and painful and I shed a boatload of tears for little Rocky.
Now my six little ladies are about 18 weeks old and I am waiting for the first egg, doing pelvic bone checks with great anticipation. So far, I have a half-dozen slackers, lol. All with different personalities, all apparently healthy and happy.
Buying full-grown chickens has its benefits, of course, and it is up to the individual as to how much time and effort they want to put into this chicken raising thing.
Whatever you choose, have fun with your girls!

We are glad you joined our flock.

I voted no but if this is your very first flock then it would be ok to start with grown chickens IMO.
Beware that adding chickens to an existing flock is never fun and be careful about adding older chickens in the future...they can bring disease into an existing flock that can wipe them out.
