HI there, brand new to the chicken world. I got my very first chicks 6 weeks ago and been watching this forum for advice and helpful information. I have 6 teens, 4 of the Barred Rocks, and 2 supposedly Black Asians (though not a breed as I thought but a cross). I'm having so much fun, from handfuls of fluff, to beginning feathers all the way to turning them out in a coop a week ago. I converted an old 20 x 20 foot chainlinked dog pen I found on the property I bought while I was clearing the land, and wondered just what to do with it... After cleaning it up, I made sure the door was fully functional, turned a large dog house into a hen house, and covered the top with deer netting (more to keep the hawks, eagles and such out than keeping the kids in). I also set up a small pup tent using a 8 x 6 foot tarp, and they have cinder blocks set on their sides to roost on in there, as well as a feeder and waterer.

My dog Gator (pitbull mix) has enjoyed the show as much as I have. He loves his babies.

Today was our first rain in 3 weeks and I watched to see what the 'kids' would do. At the first sign of cooler air and thunder they all gathered round the privet tree in the center of the coop, then when the drops of rain started they scurried for the tent or tubs (now laid on their sides). Wasn't long after it stopped raining that they were back out looking to see what the clouds had left them to eat.

I've been giving them mesclun (raised in pots), meal worms, and scrambled eggs as treats so far. Tomorrow a bit of cottage cheese will be on the menu.

I've just had so much fun with them, and now know what to do with 'spare' eggs. BTW, pound cake takes 6 eggs if you need a recipe that uses lots of them.
