New/Old Chicken Mama

Hi! I live in Montana. I had chickens when I was a kid. My parents always got meat chickens and I cried every year when they got hauled off to the butcher. Now, I have a son that I’m teaching this life skill of raising chickens. Instead, we have opted for layers. We got 3 Barred Rock hens with a Black Star thrown in. They are our “Working Girls.” Then, I discovered Silkie Chickens and fell in love. We now have four 2 week old chicks. They’re all different colors. I’m beside myself with excitement as I love to cuddle and talk to my babies! Can’t wait to experience chickens on a whole new level!

Welcome to BYC. Silkies are very popular with kids and grown-ups. They generally make excellent "broody hens," meaning they like to sit on fertile eggs and hatch/raise the chicks.
Of course you need a rooster to have fertile eggs.
