I took someone elses flock. Lady said they all layed. WE have had them for a few weeks. Have done everthing right. They are happy and comfy. Only one chicken is laying as far as I can tell. I got chickens to have eggs. If they are not gonna lay...no good to me. Cute as pets. But not the point. Do try to find out who is laying and keep that one? Or do I get rid of them all so I dont have to worry about mixing flocks???? If I were to find out who were laying, how do you do that?

trying to put it delicately some people use different colored lipstick for each hen and apply to the hen's area where eggs pop out. The idea is when the egg is laid some of the lipstick color will come off on it and you will know which hen layed it.

Wow! Really?

Sorry to hear about your situation, tankgirl. If they are roosters and you have to get rid of them, I hope you don't give up on raising chickens!

I am not going to give up on raising chickens at all. I am going to get some new chicks. I don't know if I should keep the one that is laying, and raise it with the chicks when they are coop ready. Or just get ride of the whole flock entirely. Is it bad to mix them in like that? Will the big one kill the little one?

You can look at the color of their legs also. The legs are always a yellowish color but when they are laying good you will notice the ones that are laying good will have a more white color to their legs. Also if you put on a glove and flip em over, if you can insert two fingers easily in the area where they lay eggs from lol they are laying. It seems gross but it has worked for me, but I look at my he s legs daily for color changes.

We have had them for about a month now, and have not upset them in any other way since we have had them. They seem to love their coop. They love their feed, and they love to free range. I have given them apple cidar vinegar. And that worked to get one to lay.....But I'm just not sure if the rest are ever going to. I enjoy them all a lot, they are so fun, but I can't just keep dumping money into chickens that wont lay.

She could, I would not leave them unsupervised until you know. I would keep the hen that is laying, partiall yso that could tell the story of how figured out who it was! You could name her the shade of lipstick you used! "oh , that's maroon, she was my very first layer!" LOL! Anywho The rule I go by is I try not to introduce chicks until they are not peeping like babies anymore. Then the hens are not so mean to them. Introduce meaning live together. Sorry about how sloppy this post was! I'll do better next time!
