A friend gave me 4 peafowl eggs to set under my broody hen. One hatched on day 23, I think (while we were on vacation- set them so we would be home in time for the hatch, go figure). We came home on day 24 and the chick was totally dry and walking around with mama in the coop. She didn't want to sit except at night, so I tried to rescue the other three by slipping them under another broody. They did not hatch. I was kind of caught off guard when we came home and I apologize in advance for my ignorance. I am very familiar with chickens and ducks, but this is my first venture outside of those and so far I am feeling like a failure!!

What now?
  • I can't get my mind around having to build a new structure for one bird. Can I house it with the chickens (once it gets some size on it)?
  • Should I figure out some way to get another baby?
  • At what point can I let it live outside on its own? We live in the middle of 80 acres of woods. Will it run off without a friend? I thought having a chicken mama would help them stay put, but with just one...?
