I had to share this pic of my 8 week old Barred Rock and Speckled Sussex.... Cause they were so adorable.

Store bought lumber such as 2x4s and 1x2s do not make good perches and are uncomfortable for the chickens to roost on. You should use natural roosts, such as tree branches approx 3 inches in diameter. (maybe a little smaller right now sense they are young)

I have both. Most of my outside perches are limbs, but this perch spans 7.5 ft and I couldn't find a limb long enough. These are just the youngest of my birds...

Very sweet pic. I added two speckled sussex chicks this spring. They are about 10 weeks old now. I like their personalities and it is fun watching them speckle-up as their coloring develops. And I love my older barred rocks too!

They look like they are enjoying it!!! I built a freestanding one today out of left over wood I had from a box I made the chicks when they were very young. I am in the process of expanding the run and trying to talk the hubby into a new (larger, safer, sturdier) coop. So I can't add great perches yet. My birds seem to really enjoy theirs too. They were very excited when I put it out for them. :)
Nice job!
