We are in the process of clearing an area for new better/stronger/faster pens than we have now. I have some 14 gauge 2x4x72 welded wire fence for the project. Instead of putting netting over the top i'm thinking about using the same welded wire. Any input on the wire top is welcome.

One of the reasons i'm wanting to do the wire is we are thinking of planting grapes on either side of the pen. Pheasant pen and grape arbor combined

Thanks
Steve

Some people like the netting for the top better so they bounce off of it when they hit it................... if not it can result in flattened pheasants.....- , not pretty..... he he.

All my pheasant pens are topped with one inch chicken mesh that hangs loosely, acting much like netting would. I live in a wooded area and my problem has always been squirrels chewing holes in netting, thus the wire. The welded wire sounds a bit "hard" and would give me concern if the birds were spooked into flushing. If you can figure a way to keep some play in the top, it may work.

I know........... what is it with Squirrels and netting? Also, why do peafowl love to play in it? Everytime I am fixing or mending netting, I look behind me and every peafowl there is either laying in it, scratching it or trying to eat it?

The 2x4 wire is what I have on the top of my pheasant pen. If they get spooked, they do fly into it.....haven't had any major issues with it though.
