Hello! Newbie chicken owner from Washington State here, excited to continue learning about all things poultry!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Kinda! My aunt had chickens growing up that when I visited I would have to collect eggs from, but I was actually terrified of birds for a long time. I've officially had chickens for about 6 months, and quail for about 5.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
10 adult chickens, 7 pullets, and 19 newly hatched chicks... Chicken math is terrifying.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Opringtons, Sussex, Easter Eggers, silkies and a few I'm not sure what they are. We also have some day old Rhode Island Reds and lots of coturnix quail.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Honestly, for me its just been wonderful to grow past my irrational fear of birds as I slowly bond with these guys (I appreciate the eggs but I dont eat them personally). I also adore incubating and hatching chicks! My husband loves every part of it, including eating the eggs.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We also raise meat rabbits for ourselves and our cats and dogs, as well as dubia roaches and superworms for the chickens. In our spare time my husband and I are avid readers of non-fiction, enjoy watching movies together, and love cooking!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I are both under 25 and have been married for 3 years. In addition to our poultry and rabbits, we have 3 large dogs and 5 cats that are raw fed! No set career yet, but we both work steady jobs to provide for our full house.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Whenever I google a question about chickens or quail, responses to similar questions on this website show up. I love being able to read firsthand accounts in place of sponsored articles, I've learned a lot of valuable things. Decided it was time to join!
