Hello BYC members! My husband and I are new to raising hens. We are very excited. Gardening has been a passion for us for several years. Now we have decided to broaden our horizons.
I have been looking at the Orpingtons but I'm afraid they won't do well with other hens. I would really like to have more than one breed. Does anyone have advice on a breed that will get along with Orpingtons?
Thanks in advance for the advice. I look forward to learning and sharing!

Welcome!!
I love gardening too, thats why I got my australorp chicks!
I don't have any advice... I'm new to all of this, too :)

Orpingtons are pretty docile birds. They will get along with any other breed of chicken. The Rhode Island Reds are gentle birds, as are the Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, and many others.

You might want to stop by our learning center here on BYC for lot of tips and hints on keeping your flock...

And while you are there, stop by our breeds page to see what other members are saying about the different breeds...

Here is a really nice external page that I like. It has a lot of quick information on the different breeds and their qualities...

Good luck with your new adventure and welcome to BYC!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some great links to check out. X2, most of the heavy breeds will get along together, Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks, Wyandottes, Sussex, Delaware, NHR, Australorps, Jersey Giants, Easter Eggers etc, I personally do find the RIR and some Red Sex Links can be rather bossy in a mixed flock though.

Welcome from a fellow gardener! I don't have any Orpingtons, but of the seven chicken breeds we do have, our Cochins are the most docile, and friendliest. I'd bet Cochins would get along with just about anything. Good luck!
