I have 4 hens who are two years old and have been raised together since hatching. I recently acquired 2 five month old pullets. After making sure everyone was healthy, I had the younger gals in a separated space in my run so they could see the older girls but were protected. I left them like that for about 2 weeks. About 5 days ago I released the little ones and their feet have not touched the ground since. The immediately flew to the top of the coop (which is enclosed inside the run) and spend all of their time there. They occasionally visit the food/water station I had left set up for them inside the dog kennel they had been living in but other than that they only hang out on the coop roof. The older girls roost with them up there at night (with plenty of space between the two groups) but the new ones will not come down into the run at all. Am I expecting to much to soon? Should I take the dog crate out so they are forced to come down and socialize to get food and water? I have a lovely large run area with lots of toys and things for chickens to do and I hate that they live on the roof! Not to mention the new ones should start laying any day now and I am not sure how they will do that on the roof! Thanks for any advice.
Picture attached of them high on the roof while the older girls frolic!

I would at least put them on the ground for a few times each day to see if they start going down themselves. I'm sure they are a bit terrified of the older birds and prefer to stay out of their way.

How big is the run shown in feet by feet?
Looks pretty nice but space is taken up by the tine coop, the dog crate, and whatever is in the back left corner.
Is there more run space than is shown here?
Is that little coop/run where the youngers lived or the 4 older birds?

Run is about 6ft by 12 feet...the the small coop in the middle. The dog kennel was where I kept the two new girls when I first got them, I left it out there so they'd have to option to get back in if they wanted. In the back left corner is just some perches for them. The little coop is where the older girls lay eggs and 2 of them sleep in there, but the other two roost up on top of it with the new girls.

Hmm, the folks at my urban farm store reassured me that was plenty. Any advice or suggestions for working with the space I have? I live in a metropolitan area and more space is not an option.
