Aloha,
I’m a mom of a 14 week old rooster named Declan. He’s a rescue we found while out walking. I’m guessing he was a day old or so when we found him as he was pooping green. Wasn’t sure he’d make it, but here we are. He’s just beginning to crow and sounds like a rusty gate. I shush him and he stops for a moment, gives me a look, and tries again.
Declan is a typical Hawaiian Jungle Fowl although very domesticated now. He has free range of the house and yard while we are home. He hangs out in the bedroom while we are out.
Beyond this guy, we have two old dogs, Koda and Rogue, that he irritates with his clownish ways. All three of them enjoy rolling around the yard, sleeping, and hanging out in the kitchen while I cook.
I have a little garden and have planted some chia, lentil, and wheat grass for the chicken and the dogs, which they’ve been enjoying this summer.
I’m a special education teacher so it’s nice to have some time off to enjoy my house, the yard and my animal friends.
Declan is my only chicken currently but we are a 10 week old pullet next week from a couple who rescued her in Honolulu. I found BYC while looking for information on how to introduce chickens to one another.
