I just went outside to check my new rooster and when I picked him up some brown colored mucous came out his mouth in a long string. I just bought him last wk aft a bobcat killed my wonderful rooster and now wonder if this rooster has some disease that will kill him too. I'm really new at this and when I bought him, the lady selling said she had some sick chickens but they "only had colds". What do I do? antibiotics? He has been with my hens all wk now also. Help. PS - no cough or sneezing noted at all in last wk.

putting pressure unintentionally on the crop (or near it) can cause this.... so it may have happened/been due to this when you picked him up.

Thank you for the quick reply. I sure hope so but I did notice yesterday, when I was standing a ways away, that it looked like when he put his head down to peck and lift a line of mucous came out. I went over to ck but couldn't find anything in the dirt but it was like his mouth drained when he put his head down. He eats & drinks fine. The 2 hr. trip home with him there was not coughing or sneezing and I go out at night shen he's roosting and can't hear anything. I am worried as the lady selling the chickens said she lost a bunch of chickens last yr to colds but only "a few this yr". While picking him out she caught two pullets who she said had bad eyes and tossed them out of the pen next to him, then she picked him put (unwashed hands from sick birds) and put him into my cage. I think I made a big mistake here!
