I have a Silkie roo that I've put in with my EE hens. He seems to be happy but he has the hardest time mating. They're just a tiny too tall for him. Today I saw he finally seemed to have gotten one of the hens. He was so proud. My question is if he'll make a good roo for them or do they need a bigger protector and also is there a chance for some hybrids? I do plan on incubating some of the eggs in the future but I'm not sure how long he needs to be with the girls to get some chicks.

Thanks!

He'll be just fine, as sourland said, roosters mainly just sound the alarm. Yes, occasionally a rooster will attempt to fight or even more rarely kill a predator but those incidents are the exception rather than the rule. If he's a gentleman and the girls love him than I see little reason to replace him

The greatest protection most roosters provide is as a warning system. 3 days after mating, eggs should be fertile.

Thank you both! I'll leave him with his new flock.

I was worried cause he's so small and most of my roosters are bigger birds and seem very good at protection. One even beat the crap out of a raccoon.
