We got a new rooster six days ago. Since then we have had no eggs. None in the yard either. The rooster is very gentle and sweet but he also seems to pick on one certain hen. She keeps running away from him and he keeps chasing her until she lays down and acts submissive. He doesn't bother the other hens. She keeps making little crying noises and staying by herself in a corner away from everyone. Also, there are feathers around everywhere. Is it stress, molting? And why is the rooster bothering just one hen? Does he hate her? I have not had this problem yet. Last night she hid, when it was getting dark she made noises, he came and got her and pushed her until she got up and ran to the coop. He is protective. Please help. Oh, we got one egg after six days.

Your hens are just not used to a rooster and need to adjust. He does not hate that particular hen, quite the opposite actually... she is his favorite! He will continually try to mate her and this stresses her out... unless you can see him actually trying to phisically harm her, in wich case you have a problem and need to either separate the rooster or that hen. Good luck!!!

hope you are right. Thanks. The rooster they had before Fred was a bit of a psycho, very agressive and mean. This one is gentle and friendly.
