Hello, today I introduced a 4 month old barred rock rooster to my flock of hens that are 1 1/2 years old. My hens have been picking on him a lot and chasing him. When will he stand up to them? Will he crow or even mate due to them picking on him? He will eventually get bigger but I'm anxious to see if anyone has any guesses on what will happen. Thanks

As long as they aren't seriously injuring him, I wouldn't be worried. I like to raise my roosters with my meanest hens. They learn to respect the girls better that way.

Okay. Thanks so much. I let the free range yesterday so they can get their mind off him. And he is a barred rock. He will get bigger than them. Will he eventually mate them? Cause I want some fertile eggs.

Once your rooster matures a bit and your hens thump some manners into him, they'll all fall in love.

agreed^ I also do the same and ended up with two well behaved roo's. and once he's a year old, I think its safe to say most of your eggs will be fertile. by then you should see him mounting...

Okay, thanks. That's awesome. And about when should he start to crow

should crow around 6 months. some earlier, esp if you have another rooster. some are late bloomers and will take longer.

Although around 6 months is average, they will crow when they feel like it...

Okay thanks. I have a silkie rooster also and he would crow but then he suddenly stopped and never crows anymore
