New setting for an old hobby

We got originally two Welsummers two black sex link, two green eggers and two wyandottes. I already had wyandottes before, but my husband wants all kinds of eggs. Well, he'd never had chickens before, so it will be fun for him. One of the wyandotte chicks got pulled into a home left by voles in our yard. It happened so fast, I couldn't see what it was, so our likely culprits are a snake or a wood rat. The feed store let us get a replacement, but they weren't getting any more wyandottes, so we got an ISA brown. She's cute, but I had no idea they have such a short lifespan. We picked the Welsummer chicks because we'd been in several times trying to get ther chicks I wanted and they hadn't sold. They were getting bigger and I kinda felt bad for them.
