Hey all,
Just wanted to show off my new ameracauna bantam hen. Bringing her to the Portage Wisconsin Show, any other Wisconsinites going?

I'd like to know that to. How do I cage train?
Have you ever seen the small display cages at poultry shows? They look very confining, yet most of the birds are calmly sitting/eating/minding their own business (or crowing their heads off 'cause they can see ALL those other roosters!) You need to get your potential show birds used to feeling safe in small (and potentially busy) cages. You can do that at home simply by caging them briefly every day. This is especially important if your birds free range or have a very large run to wander. We keep a small dog kennel in the coop pretty much all the time. It gets used for everything from a broody nest to a hospital cage to a look-no-see introduction space. All of the birds know it's there and they've all eaten out of it, either treats or regular feed. If your hen is comfortable with a cage, spend a little time getting her used to being put in and out of it. Have people other than yourself do it, too. After all, she won't know the judge! You basically just want her to think of the show cage as an extension of her own "safe space" at home. Not only will it make her "show" better, but it will reduce her stress at shows... and yours!
EDIT - typos ... oops!
