Hey everyone!! I have been reading all your posts and have been wanting to join for some time, and I just havent yet because I wanted to actually get some chickens again first lol. I can say I am officially a silkie owner again today! And I am so excited. I had a silkie rooster growing up who I totally loved and I have been waiting for the right time to get more again and now im a mom with a few kids and we bought a house so I finally got some again :) I just picked them up. They are all bearded silkies and are less then half a day old and are already exploring their food/water. I am excited to take pictures of them to show everyone, and maybe make sure I picked out all the right colors I wanted :) I am not sure what one of them is going to be. I picked out 6 of them. A White, black, blue, splash, buff and one that looks buff but has a darker back? The breeder did their best to pick out the females going by weight and looking at their wings and I triple checked them myself so im really hoping they will be hens so I dont have to give up any favorites. We live in the city so we cant have roosters. I am also curious why some have big fluff balls on their heads but some dont. Does that mean some will have fluffier heads then others or will they catch up? I cant wait to share my new babies with everyone, i just thought i'd give them some time to adjust to their new home first :)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on your new chicks! Silkies are adorable! TwoCrows gave you some great links to check out! Ya, it does seem like the bigger puff ball they have on their head as a chick, the better the chance they will have a big one as adults. If you want to know as early as possible since Silkies take so long to be sure, you could consider having them DNA tested via feathers, this lab in Canada does them for around $10 a bird if you do more than 5 at one time. http://www.accu-metrics.com/avian.php

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! Glad to have you here! I love silkies!

Silkies are very difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age - or as some say you don't know till one lays or crows. They are beautiful birds and very popular especially with children.

Thanks guys, yes I know a little bit about silkies. I had one growing up and have done extensive research since then. Its just fun to hope I guessed right with my new babies. :)
