2 of my chickens died 2 days ago cause of someones dog jumping in my yard. I bought 3 2 week old silkies and from another breeder 2 8 week old pekins chicks. 1 of them has a strange odour to her nostrils and has lost a small amount of discharge from her nose not much though. No sneezing or snuffals. Her crop is empty but is trying to eat. She did have some meal worms though. She appears active enough. She is drinking well. I have added acv to her water. She appears to be gasping. She ststches out her neck and her mouth opens wide. Cannot feel any blockage. I cant even feel her crop. She is being feed medicated chick starter. If she has corya do I have to kill all my birds. She has been about 3 metres from my 2 remaining silkies from the dog kill. She has been in with the silkies I bought with her as well as the other pekin. I have never killed anything before.

separate her now from the others in a dog crate or something until it can be figured out, since you got the 2 together you can keep them together I guess but would be better to separate her entirely.

Put them as far away from your silkie's as possible.

As for the illness I am hoping someone else will chime in. that is a very specific symptom and should be relatively easy to diagnose, I hope...

Good Luck.

thank you happychick i will more her right away . Does a 8 week old chicken still need a warm light on them. It is winter here and I dont have another light.

If your chick has a smell discharge look up Coryza. You don't have much time to get them (all of your chickens) the medication they need.

its winter? where the heck are you

ok since no one has spoken up I will try to help. First we have to determine what exactly it is. sounds like Coryza but here I am of little help since I do everything organically and dont use antibiotics. I would search Corza and the treatent and start right away. If you think that the silkies might have been exposed best to treat them as well.

if I was you I would contact the owner of First State Vet Supply the owner is very nice and can walk you through the best treatment. http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/

Just
send him an e-mail I cant say enough kind words about him.

i am also hoping that someone else will chime in

as far as heat 8 week old should be able to handle 60 degrees if they seem cold (huddling etc.) then keep a heat lamp around them. Making sure they have a draft free area is more important so make sure that they have that.
