I have 8 red (almost 1 y.o.) hens that, of course, squat when I come by them, total normal. But now that they know that I have 4 new chicks and 5 ducklings (which they are separated from) the hens will walk around with their wings partially extended if I go by them? Any ideas?

Glad you joined us!

I don't think I'll be much help, though I'm guessing your hens are fine. You may want to post in the ''chicken egg laying and behavior'' section. enjoy your flock!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Doesn't sound related to me. Is it getting warm where you are? Could your hens be over heating? I have never seen my birds raise their hackles at chicks, but it is possible yours are.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

Yes, it was warm the past couple of days, much cooler today, and they are not puffed about! I do think it was because it was too warm outside, they had started seeking shade too! Took care of that! They now have an overhead shade area they can congregate in!!! Thanks to all.
