We are new to all things Chicken. We live in Fort Lauderdale and we grow our own produce hydroponically and are looking to add Chickens to the mix. (Only as pets and for the girls eggs, of course.) Does anyone know of any "Hen" restrictions within the city limits?

Also, looking for breed suggestions. We really love the personality of the Buff Orpingtons as we have a seven year old who will be using them also for a school project. We were told by several that the Orpies are too heavy of a breed for the heat and humidity. It was suggested to get the Speckled Sussex, Red Star and Black Australorp, possibly Easter Eggers.

We are looking for calm, fairly quiet, sweet birds that we can handle and ones that can take the heat. Any personal stories, suggestions and information on where to purchase are greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Hi I'm in South florida also (miami). I have 6 hens (one of which is a possible rooster) and they are 2 welsummer, 2 rhode island reds, and two dominiques and so far them seem to be doing well in the heat, they usually keep in the shade so as long as you have shady areas. My RIR are specially very hardy and deal with the heat well, as well as the Dominiques which are a bit smaller, the Welsummer seem to be the ones that deal with the heat the least, i would assume Orpies would be the same, but ragardless as long as they have lots of shade, our backyard much cooler because of the trees than generally outside.

I got my chicks from mypetchicken.com

good luck!

I live in fort lauderdale. Is it possible to keep a chicken and a rooster in the house all the time? Or do I need to move to another city........or state?

Each county, state and city have there own ordinances. this would be a question to go to your city council, i know in one city near me it is 5 hens, another is 3 hens and 2 cities do not allow chickens
