Hiya,

Am new to keeping quails and am in the process of making a coop at the moment and was just wondering how many quails we could have comftably in the new coop.
Once finished the coop will be approx 5ft long x 2ft wide x 2 1/2 ft high with a house approx. 20" x 20" x 24" the house is on legs so the run goes underneath and then out so the run is about 5ft long.
Any ideas how many we could house in this size coop? and also what breed would be best suited to it?

Thanks in advance

Emma

Im kind of new to this too, but I've read about this and usually for grow up quails 1sq ft per bird is recommended, but I've heard of people who have them in smaller places, me personally I have 15 Bobwhites in a pen about 60sq ft which is wayyyy more than enough and they seem to do great, they make use of all that space tho as theyre always scattered all over the place, i have a little house inside the coop, but they rarely use it since I have some plants inside the pen they use that for protection against the wind. As far as what kind of quail you should get, I would say that depends on what you want your quails for, if you want them just as pets, I'd say the bobwhites arent the best choice there pretty wild, coturnix from what I've heard are more tame and they also lay wayyy more eggs.

Thanks for your reply Crash

and i love the idea of plants in the coop, what a brilliant idea!
We want them mainly as pets, we have a little girl who adores animals so we want to be handling them a lot, but obviously if they lay then that will be a nice bonus for us too

We were thinking of getting around 5 or 6 so our coop should house that many fine by the sound of it and after doing a little research i think we are going to go for the Coturnix as i think they would suit us better.
Thanks a lot for your help

Thats plenty of room. I would get coturnix quail they make great pets and lay lots of eggs. You could get some tuxedos or A&M whites they are just pretty. I keep 5-6 breeder birds in alot smaller area houses don't seem to matter they won't lay in a nest so go with natural looking cover.
