Hey there, we were given a chicken coop and two RIR for free and we are loving them! And the eggs they are giving us. We just bought two baby chick ameraucanas and i was wondering if I made I big mistake buying them. Will the grown chickens attack the little ones when eventually they are put together?

! Pleased you joined our community! There is a right and a wrong way to intro new birds to old. The right way is when the birds are old enough - for sure fully feathered but I like to wait even longer - to when the newbies are at least 2/3-3/4 of the size of the established ones. Intro them this way - at the proper age let them get to know each other through a fence for several days - they can have visual contact but the little ones can't get picked on. After a few days I put the newbies into the coop with the older birds at dark - they won't get beat up in the dark. In the a.m. at first light open the coop and monitor the interaction. There will be normal pecking order dominance displayed by the older ones - that's okay. As long as no one is getting singled out for abuse you should be good to go. If one or more is, isolate them on the other side of the fence and repeat the process. There may be other way but this has always worked for me. Good luck to you!!
