Hmm, what breeds you ask? Hot summers, cold winters. Sounds like the temperatures here in Wisconsin sometimes. I have a large flock with a good few different breeds. I'd say with any breed of chicken, just make sure it has a warm place to be in the winter and a cool, shady place to be in the summer. Maybe somebody else has something they would like to add.
Anyway, have fun with your chicken adventure!!

Welcome to BYC! Temperament wise, I think Buff Orpingtons would do well, but I'm not too sure they'll like the heat of your environment.

Yes, both the Buff Orpingtons I have owned have been quite sweet. Although one of them, went on a sort of talkative "rant" sometimes. She was a very sweet bird though.

Thank you everyone. I am looking into chicken coops right now. Any good resources on detailed DIY chicken coop plans. We are not very handy with tools, but can work around detailed instructions. I am planning to devote the long weekend towards getting the coop ready.
I want to make sure we have the coop ready before we get our chicks.
