New to backyard chickens! I need help!

Whoa, you’re kidding! I guess no free delivery if its over $35? That’s amazons policy in the States, but it didn’t occur to me it would hold true for Canada.

The product has duty and other import taxes on it as it is not a Cnd product.

We have Stall Dry up here, similar product. I have used it with my mare who floods an ocean of pee on her stall. But it’s very expensive for a horse.

Never tried it with the chooks because I clean my roosting ledges daily and bed with shavings.

I didn’t know about the duty/taxes. That’s unfortunate. So yeah, a similar product makes sense.

Hi everyone! I found this website after posting on reddit and finding it quite rough 😅 someone recommended i posted here, so here i am!
I live in the greater Montreal area, Canada, with my husband and 2 little kids (2 and 4). We're getting 4 hens in 4 days and are currently finishing up building our coop.

I need help with the bedding and all the other details.
My coop is 20 sq feet and the run is 50 sq ft. We can't have more than 5 hens in our town and they cannot free range.

The roof of the run was going to be just the metal wire (heavy duty) but now I'm wondering if I should put a roof?

What kind of bedding would you advise for the coop? I was looking into deep bedding.

What should I put on the ground in the run? I was thinking sand but I'm afraid it'll get gross and wet if there's no roof.
Ideally I want everything as low maintenance as possible. Deep litter possibly?

For feeding, the hens will be 12 weeks old when we get them. The farmer said to give them a feed for growth. Do you agree with that?
For water, i wanted to get a bucket with chicken water nipples. Are those good?

Any other tips would be appreciated! I feel so overwhelmed and pressed with time! View attachment 4134971View attachment 4134972thank you!🙏
Looking at your setup, I can make some suggestions from experience.

1. Leave a screen door so you can access under the coop without having to go in the run and climb under.

2. I'm in florida so the sun here gets extreme. They need shade. I put wire on top of the run to deter Hawks ect, but also a tarp Zip tied on part of that.

3. If they are Chick's and not near grown, but medicated crumbles. Pellets are a big NO. They will choke on pellets.

4. They need Sandy soil as they will take dirt baths to keep mites and pest knocked back.

5. Keeping water and feed just slightly elevated will cut down on maint as they love to stand in it (and do other things).

Can't speak to the water nipples as I keep a trough for water.

As they get bigger, you will want a feeder that they have to stick their head in the tunnel (and feed box). They waist allot of food, this will prevent this.

Hope this helps,
John from Florida
