Greetings! I have used this helpful site many times, and am joining officially now. I was raised with family flocks, and at different intervals depending on location, etc. have raised chickens as a backyard endeavor. My largest flock was a heritage flock of Dominques, and their wing man Royal Purple Guineas, at it's height numbering 24. Sadly, we had to sell them for a move. Starting again, we now have Buff Orpington week old pullets.

Congratulations on starting over -- and with Buff Orps, who are lovely birds. The grand dame of my chickens is an Orp, who learned yesterday that a Buff goose is tougher than a Buff Orp! Thankfully, there was no real damage, just ruffled feathers.

Were the guineas good defenders or just good alarms? That must have been an interesting-looking group.

Welcome to officially being a part of BYC, Lilly 16!

Hello Lilly and welcome to BYC! :frow

Enjoy the new start! Buff Orps are a wonderful breed. Very weather hardy, they can remain healthy into old age, they live long, super friendly lap sitters and they follow you around like puppies. :p

Good luck with your new birds and welcome to our flock!

The guineas were the best defenders, we lived in a heavily wooded area and a couple paid it all for the flock. I miss them so much, they were so full of personality, knew and came to their names. We aren't allowed them on 2 acres, you must have 5. I would move if the right place came along..... I am glad your grand dame is well and only ruffled!

Good to know that is your experience with them! Excited to try something new, the Dominques flew a fair amount and were not easily contained, but were personable and friendly. We had a few that were people oriented and came when called, and some were flock oriented.
