Hello! My name is Christine! I am a mother, homeschool momma of two, a young widow, lover of ALL animals, but especially goats, horses and crazy nuts about our three sweet chickens (and new baby chicks)! So glad to be part of this community! I joined because we have three beautiful hens that we were gifted a year ago. We had always wanted to get chickens, but living in the city we didn’t know if it would be feasible. Just over a year ago, March 2019, my sweet husband was diagnosed with cancer. During the exact same time, a friend of ours decided they couldn’t care for their chickens anymore and were looking for a new home. While it seemed crazy at the time to take on a new thing during the hardest battle of our lives, my husband and I decided it would be a great idea to “adopt” these chickens. It would be great for us and for our two children. It would give them responsibility, but also joy and comfort during some painful months. My husband passed away 4 months later and let me tell you, these girls have brought healing and joy to our lives in unexpected ways. We have had them a year and I feel like they are part of our family. They follow us around wherever we go, and come when we call them. I am so grateful we decided to take them on. During this crazy time of being quarantined, we decided to take on a project. My son wanted to build a bigger chicken run. So, we made up a plan and built one in three weeks. It was a beautiful way to connect with my son. We both got to use power tools, drills and saws, which made us feel so creative and brave! Having chickens has been a gift to our family! Not only do we get the amazing benefit of fresh eggs, we also get the joy of watching them in our yard and doing all the quirky things they do. Thank you for letting us be part of this community. We just got a few more baby chicks and I will be posting on the forum soon as one has some issues going on. Hoping someone has dealt with this before and can offer some advice! Blessings to you and your families. Christine & co.

What a beautiful story of healing and chicken ownership. I’m so happy for the joy and healing your chickens brought you in your time of need.

And you homeschool! Wow. How old are your kids?

So do you have goats or you just love them? We just got some goats and it seems they are my husband’s favorite animal. We are new to goats so it will be a learning progress.

Thank you for your kind message! My son is 11, turning 12 on Saturday. And my daughter is 10! So a 6th grader and a 4th grader!

We do not have goats, just love them! Like A LOT!! Unfortunately, we can’t have goats where we live. So my son has been researching places in the country! That’s awesome that your husband loves them. How many goats to you have? Where do you live? We are in a suburb in Minnesota. But who knows...we may be relocating! The kids really want to so we’ll see where things lead! I have heard that goats are not that difficult to have so hopefully you are finding that to be true. Good luck. What a fun and exciting journey!! How old are they?

We got six. They were someone’s pets but I guess they quickly ran out of room when two of the girls had kids. One to twins and the other to a single one. I think the babies are under a year. And the three adults are between 1 and 3 years old. My husband knows, I didn’t care for goats haha I love chickens and guineas and turkeys.

We currently have them in a 10 by 20 ft pen, which I find to be tiny, but from where we got them they were being kept in a spot half that size. We have to build them an enclosure soon.

I’m in the country in southwest Georgia. I am not from here but I have learned to love it and recommend it here. Well the country parts of Georgia not so much the cities.

Your kids are still pretty young. That’s awesome that your son is involved in looking for a potential place to expand your animal family.

The set up here is very similar to Tacoma World. Very user friendly :bun

New to chickens.

I assume you've had an increase in members due this pandemic.

Ive been following a certain thread the last few days.

Decided to join.
You guys have good stuff.

Been reading on my own.
It is nice to have more experienced chicken raisers to follow and read up on their successes, techniques and leassons learned from failure.

Have 7 eggs in an incubator. Today is day 4.
