But hes been niceWso far and we have a mutual respect for each other. I realized I needed more help when one of my hens decided to sit on her eggs. I didn't think she was actually serious, its fall and getting very cold! I thought she was just young and dumb. BUT surprise, I came into the coop Saturday and there was one little, very-cute chick!!
I have 4(1 of them is the rooster) Rhode Islands, 3 Cinnamon Queens, 2 Australorps and a black sex link. I've grew up around chickens but my parents were their main caretakers. We built a nice run with their coop but we let them out to roam around the property and I have LOVED watching them! Its relaxing and funny at times.

Welcome to BYC, Chris. It's nice when the hen sits on the eggs and then raises the chicks, isn't it?

I absolutely love roosters. I am happy you have a good relationship with yours. He is young, so while you are developing a "long term" trust, he may try to protect if he feels threatened or you happen to be in the chicken yard and he gets "spooked" by a threatening sound. If he wing dances you like he will attack, just don't react and keep doing what you are doing - relaying to him that you are not going to be part of the grappling session. It is my experience that this is the best way to maintain the good relationship. We can't expect roosters to protect hens to the point of willingness to sacrifice their own lives, but yet not be "uptight" sometimes. Those things go together.
