Hi...my husband recently brought home 6 chicks as a surprise for me...I have always wanted to raise chickens however I know very little about raising chicks. I had planned to educate myself on the raising of chicks before we actually got any. Mu husband jumped in and now I have baby chicks to care for...precious ones. So I am looking for any info that will help me be a successful "mother hen". I thank you for all the help.

Welcome and congratulations on your new chicks! I also started with 6 chicks last April and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Go to the learning center and you will find a lot of great information on caring for chicks. You will find info about how to set up your brooder, feeding, and general care of chicks.

Hi and welcome to BYC!
You need a container to keep them all in, and it needs to be in a draft free area.
You also need a heat lamp, and make sure it has a porcelain socket as a plastic one will melt.
You need a chicken drinking fountain (available in 1 quart- 5 gal) and a feeder, I recommend putting marbles in the water as chicks will fall asleep ANYWHERE, and often drown in their water fountain, the marbles will prevent the chicks head from being completely submerged in the water if it falls asleep.

Definitely follow the links that Kelsie has provided. Those are great places to get lots of good information on raising your new babies.

Enjoy your new adventure!
