New to BYC and chicken owning in general:)

Hi everybody proud to be a new member of BYC, being a new chicken owner I know I have a lot to learn. So I tell my story how I acquired my first chickens. My husband was doing work on a farm,in return he gets to hunt there. Me and my two year old daughter were there too she loves playing with all the baby cows, kittens, dogs and so on. They have over a hundred chickens on this farm they sell the eggs and little chicks. They just had a bunch of chicks hatch my daughter was playing with them and wouldn't let them go, long story short she was in love and I couldn't break her heart so the farmer told us to pick put whichever ones we wanted and take them. So we went home with three day old chickies. We had no clue what breed they were neither did the farmer he said probably some kind of bantams. Well they turned out to be American game chickens and we think all three are cockerels sighs. They are all so sweet though they never peck or anything and my daughter is constantly chasing them.And they get along great which I hope continues they are almost 4 months old and have no problems being together of course we don't have any pullets or hens for them to fight over. Which sucks the whole reason we wanted chickens was for fresh eggs

Greetings from Kansas and . Happy you joined our community. Sorry to hear your baby chicks turned out to be boys. Can you return to the farm and try your luck on some females? Also, many farm and ranch stores are selling their fall chicks right now as well. Hope you end up with some egg layers. Best wishes to you!

Thanks redsoxs I could give them back and I'm sure he'd give us some hens. Every time I go to the farm he's trying to give me more chickens

.The problem is I have gotten to attached to those little guys being the first chickens I've raised since they were about 3 days old, I'd be heartbroken

.. So I'll just enjoy my boys for now and next year when we can build another coop get a bunch of girlies that I know are girlies

Loved your intro. I think your plan is a good one, as long as the boys continue to get along well, should be great. You can practice "chickening," on them and have real "hands on," experience for next year when you get some hens.

Game chickens vary... I've got some Ga Noi who are VERY game with any rooster who dares to get within 5' of them, but given a 4,000 square foot run, are able to coexist without killing each other. On the other hand I've got an American broodcock who's dead game and will flog himself against a fence for hours and half kill himself trying to get at another rooster.

But on the other hand AGF are VERY personable towards humans. And make excellent flock roosters.

My advice... if they are really your pets and making special considerations for non-food producing animals isn't a bother for you, then you can keep them together in a bachelor pen as long as they get along and eventually add a separate group of hens for egg production.

However, if they do begin to have issues and fight amongst each other, you might go ahead and pick out a favorite and keep him. Send the other two back to the farm. Ask to borrow a hen or two to keep the rooster company until you get new chicks, and after that he can be your yard art/flock rooster.
