New to BYC and chickens in general!

Welcome to BYC!

You can determine the sex by checking the neck feathers. If they are more pointed at the ends, he/she might be a rooster, but you'll also have to look at the size of the spurs, their tail, and big, red combs and wattles.

This may not be the place to post this, but everyone is so helpful. Since I really don't know what I'm supposed to be doing to ensure my birds are healthy, I'd really appreciate some helpful tips. I have read several things on this site, but I'd love to have more information. I'm currently feeding them grower feed, and have just started adding some scratch. I do give them some grit as well. I make sure they have fresh water. They live in a small mobile coop, and I have just started letting them out for a little while to run around.

If they have access to natural dirt and soil, they can find their own stones for the gizzard. If little is available, you might want to purchase a bag of grit. You can get it at TSC. It is a Manna Pro product. Good sized stones for the gizzard.

I am a firm believer in the power of probiotics and apple cider vinegar. Both keep good health up in the intestinal tract of birds and that is where the immune system stays healthy. ACV also keeps the crop at a low ph to help prevent souring. So once a week, I add 1 or 2 tablespoons ACV to a gallon of water. The probiotics I add to the feed a few times a week.

Make sure they have good feed at all times, (not too old, no bugs or mold), clean water and lots of sun shine. Give them a ton of love and you will be good to go!

You can post questions about feeding in the feeding of your flock section for more details.
