New to BYC and new chicken owner.

Hi everyone, I’m new to BYC and glad to be here to learn as much as I can. I have never had chickens until now. About 5 days ago I purchased 8 baby chicks of different breeds, they are all within a day or so of age. (Sadly one didn’t make it through the first night ) so we now have 7.

I hope the rest do okay, I’m already getting attached. I’m hoping to learn as much as I can here and am open to advice. Plus I enjoy seeing all the pics of everyone’s cute chickens and coops.

Yes I recently got a coop and am working on building a big run. I would like for them to be free range in our yard during the day but that might not work.

We live on half an acre in town and do have a completely fenced yard (which is great). My only concern about free ranging the yard are our dogs. We have 2 wiener dogs, one in a mini but the other is a standard. The standard is a good size (30 lbs) and he loves to chase the cat. I am concerned he would hurt one of the chickens if he got ahold of it.
