Hello all:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

My husband and I are completely new to chickens. Any help/advice that can be given would be welcomed dearly!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Currently 0; hoping to change that in the near future.

(3) What breeds do you have?

What is a hardy breed of chickens for the Tennessee climate?

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Lots of google searches.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Crocheting. Looking to expand.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My husband and I recently bought a 5 acre plot in the country. The house is not old but had been sitting empty for almost 2 years. The land was overgrown terribly. We have been in the process of mending the fence (a little over 3 acres had already been fenced off) and adding electric fencing as well. We are looking to start a small farm. We are learning as we go. A little apprehensive since we are not young, but never too old to learn.

We own 4 dogs (pit bulls ages 3, 7, 8 and 10, that do not know that they are dogs).

No/from birth, but had about a 30 year hiatus

Dogs are a huge chicken predator so you'll need to keep them separate.
Coops are primarily for predator protection and to keep the rain off. Don't fall into the trap of thinking they're fragile and start coddling them. Give them lots of fresh air with good ventilation year round.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Currently 45 - with lots more eggs in the incubator and hatcher

(3) What breeds do you have?

Mostly Black Penedesenca but also Jaerhon and Ameraucana

What is a hardy breed of chickens for the Tennessee climate?
Almost any breed will work there. The temperatures aren't that extreme for chickens except in the heat of summer when they need lots of shade

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Lots of google searches. - same here

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Canoeing, skiing, gardening, bees, teaching chicken and sustainability classes
